October in North Idaho is beautiful — and it’s also your last best window to get your home ready before winter settles in. A weekend of fall maintenance now can prevent expensive surprises when the temperatures drop. Here’s a practical checklist.

Outside

  • Clean the gutters: Falling pine needles and leaves clog gutters fast. Clear them so autumn rains and snowmelt drain properly instead of spilling over onto siding and foundations.
  • Disconnect hoses and shut off exterior faucets: Drain hoses, store them indoors, and shut off the water supply to outdoor spigots to prevent frozen, burst pipes.
  • Check the roof: From the ground, look for missing or damaged shingles, and make sure flashing around chimneys and vents is intact.
  • Trim trees and branches: Cut back limbs hanging over the roof or near power lines before snow and ice load them down.
  • Service the lawn and garden: Rake leaves, aerate if needed, and apply a fall fertilizer so grass roots strengthen before dormancy.

Inside

  • Service the furnace: Replace the filter and consider a professional tune-up before heating season — it’s cheaper than an emergency call in January.
  • Check weatherstripping and caulk: Seal drafts around doors and windows to keep heat in and heating bills down.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors: Replace batteries and test every unit as heating season begins.
  • Inspect the fireplace and chimney: Have the chimney cleaned and inspected if you burn wood, and check that the damper operates freely.
  • Reverse ceiling fans: Switch fans to run clockwise at low speed to push warm air down from the ceiling.

Tackle the outdoor items while the weather is still cooperative. Many of these jobs take under an hour, and you’ll head into winter knowing your home is ready. Your future self — warm inside while the snow falls — will thank you.
