Nestled between the rushing waters of the Spokane River and the towering pines of North Idaho, Black Bay Village is the kind of place where neighbors actually know each other — and much of that comes down to tradition. Throughout the year, the Black Bay Village Owners Association helps keep the village’s social calendar warm with seasonal gatherings that turn a neighborhood into a community.

Among the best-loved are the River’s Edge BBQ and the Winter Lights Walk — two events that have become fixtures of village life. One celebrates summer’s long evenings with good food and good company; the other lights up the darkest days of winter with a shared stroll through a glowing neighborhood. Together, they bookend the seasons and give residents something to look forward to all year long.

Why traditions matter here

Black Bay Village was designed around a simple idea: that a neighborhood should honor the natural beauty around it while giving people reasons to gather. The association maintains the village’s trails and green spaces, and those shared spaces become the natural setting for seasonal events — places where new residents meet longtime neighbors and where kids grow up knowing the families on their street.

Shared events do something no newsletter can: they build the kind of trust that makes a community resilient. When you’ve shared a burger with someone at the summer BBQ, you’re more likely to check in on them during a winter storm.

Looking ahead

As autumn settles over Post Falls, the village turns its thoughts toward winter. The Winter Lights Walk — a neighborhood tradition of strolling past homes dressed in their seasonal best — is the kind of simple, joyful event that reminds us why we chose to live here.

If you’re new to the village, these gatherings are the fastest way to feel at home. If you’ve been here for years, they’re a chance to welcome someone new. Either way, the invitation is always open — that’s what makes it a village.

Watch for announcements about upcoming seasonal events, and consider pitching in — volunteers are the heartbeat of every village tradition.
